Roger Estep- The California Hercules
Roger Estep was, simply putting it, a true Hercules whose titanic strength was only matched by his chiseled-out of stone physique. The picture to the left was taken at a seminar Roger gave many years ago in Ohio where he was simply demonstrating the correct way to wrap his knees for the squat. Roger used so little equipment it was ludicrous. The knee wraps you see are not $60 a pair super specials , but cheap medical bandages obtained at any corner pharmacy. He wrapped them so loosely that he put them one ONCE- at the beginning of his squat workout- and removed them at the end. His immense quadriceps development was from years and YEARS of close stance box squats and regulation squats done with very heavy weights and unusually high reps. Banging out sets of 10 in the parallel box squat with nearly 900 lbs and more was commonplace.  The old Photo below was taken from one of Mike Lambert's earliest Powerlifting US 's issues. Note the close stance, loosely applied wraps and absolutely rickety squat racks.  His torso and upper body was developed with a similar recipe of one or two basic movements. The fictional character "Sergiy Arkhipov" in the novel THE IRON FACTORY was modeled in great part after Roger even down to his long flowing 1970's "do".  I think also, that Roger would have been proud to train at the Iron Factory-dump that it was- with Sergiy,  Ivan The Fat Man and  yes..even the mean old  Coach.
